Becoming a data analyst in India, explained simply
A data analyst in India is a person who takes a company's business data, such as orders, loan repayments, delivery times or campaign clicks, cleans it, studies it and explains it in a report or dashboard so that a manager can decide something. Job titles vary. On job boards you will see Data Analyst, Reporting Analyst, BI Analyst, MIS Executive and Business Analyst, and the duties overlap more than the names suggest.
So how do you become one? Learn the working toolkit in a sensible order: Excel, SQL, exploratory analysis with Python, and a dashboard tool such as Power BI or Tableau. Practise on business datasets, put a few finished projects online, and then apply in a targeted way. Indian recruiters test practical skill early, often with a spreadsheet or SQL round, so evidence on your profile matters a great deal.
No guide can promise how long your search will take, because that depends on your city, your profile and the hiring season. This page stays with the calendar, the employers and the rounds you will meet in India. The general seven step overview of the role is on another page of this blog.
A month by month plan from beginner to first analyst interview
Treat this as a planning guide, not a fixed schedule. It assumes a few hours of practice on most days. If you study around a job, stretch each month.
Month one is spreadsheets and business language
Learn how a question such as "why did repeat orders fall in Pune?" becomes a data problem. Then live in Excel with formulas, pivot tables, XLOOKUP and data validation, and finish with one cleaned dataset and a pivot summary.
Month two is SQL on a real database
Load a sales or bank transactions table into PostgreSQL or MySQL and learn SELECT, JOIN and GROUP BY, then CTEs and window functions. Write ten queries that answer a manager's questions and keep them in a GitHub file.
Month three is Python exploration and charts
Use Pandas, NumPy and Jupyter Notebook to profile a file, handle missing values and spot outliers, then chart it with Matplotlib and Seaborn. Under every chart, write three sentences on what it shows.
Month four is dashboards, reports and KPIs
Build a Power BI or Tableau dashboard with a few KPIs, filters and a drill down, plus an executive summary, so it looks like something a team would open every Monday.
Month five is the capstone, your profile and rehearsals
Take one problem from raw data to a recommendation in a domain you can explain, such as retail or banking. Update your resume, GitHub and LinkedIn, then rehearse interview answers aloud.
Month six onward is a focused search
Apply in small batches to roles that match your tools. Note which round you struggle in and fix that one skill the following week.
What Indian employers look for, by type of employer
Analyst hiring in India spreads across very different organisations. These are general patterns, not rules, so always read the job description itself.
IT services companies
Analyst work often sits inside client projects. Expect SQL, Excel and reporting questions, and a check on whether you can learn a client's domain and follow process and deadlines.
Banks, NBFCs and finance teams
Reports feed risk, collections and finance reviews, so accuracy and reconciliation count for more than clever charts.
E-commerce and retail companies
Orders, returns and campaigns move quickly. SQL on large tables, questions about repeat customers and a weekly tracking dashboard all help.
GCCs, the India offices of global companies
Cities such as Hyderabad host many of them. Interviews tend to be structured, with SQL and BI tool questions and close attention to clear English communication.
Startups and product companies
Small teams want one person who can pull data, build a dashboard and talk to a founder.
Consulting and analytics services firms
Client facing work rewards structured thinking. Expect a case style business question alongside a SQL or Excel test.
The hiring process for analyst roles in India, round by round
Companies differ, but most analyst hiring follows some version of this path.
Resume screening by a recruiter or a tracking system
Put your tools next to your projects and use the words from the job description that are true for you.
An online test on aptitude, SQL or Excel
Tasks are often simple but short on time. Practise with a stopwatch so a timed JOIN query or pivot table does not feel new.
A technical round on tools and thinking
Expect a query to write, a pivot table question and "how would you check this number?". Talk through your reasoning aloud.
A case or take home task
You receive a small dataset and a question, sometimes with a live dashboard to build. The reviewer reads your written summary as closely as your chart.
A manager or HR conversation and the offer
Expect questions on why analytics and what your project taught you. Before accepting, read the whole offer letter and ask for the full cost to company breakdown in writing.
What an Indian recruiter expects to see in your portfolio
A recruiter may open your portfolio for a minute or two. Make that minute count.
- Two or three finished projects, each with one plain sentence at the top stating the question it answers
- An Excel project with a cleaned dataset, pivot tables and a small interactive dashboard
- A SQL file of commented queries, including at least one JOIN and one window function
- A Power BI or Tableau dashboard, published or shown in clear screenshots, with a note on its KPIs
- A domain flavoured case study, such as retail returns, bank transactions or hospital appointments, ending in a recommendation
- Only public or made up datasets, never a confidential file from a current or past employer
Which route fits you, by where you start in India
The destination is the same, but the first month looks different for each starting point.
Final-year student planning campus and off campus applications
Use college months for the first two stages, and have an Excel project and a SQL file ready before placement season begins.
Engineering graduate a year into the job search
You can move fast through SQL and Python. Spend the extra effort on business framing and on explaining results in plain language.
MIS or operations executive already living in reports
Add SQL and a BI tool, then automate one of your own reports and describe the hours it saved.
Job titles to search for and the pay range Skill IT publishes
Search job portals for Data Analyst, Junior Data Analyst, Reporting Analyst, BI Analyst, Business Analyst, MIS Executive and Insights Analyst, and read past the title into the duties, since some roles are mostly Excel reporting and others lean on SQL and dashboards.
On pay, Skill IT publishes only one indicative figure: a typical entry-to-mid range of about ₹3.5L to ₹8L a year for Data Analyst, Reporting Analyst and BI Analyst roles in India, rising with certifications and project experience. It varies by company, city, specialisation and experience, and it is not a promise. For anything more specific, check recent job listings, talk to people in the role and compare the full cost to company on every offer.
How Skill IT Education supports the path to a first analyst role
The Advanced Data Analytics Certification Program at our Madhapur centre in Hyderabad follows the same order as the plan above. It is support along the way, not a promise of any result.
Nine modules that mirror the monthly plan
The 130 hours of core curriculum move from fundamentals through Excel, SQL, exploratory analysis, visualisation, Power BI and Tableau, reporting and KPI tracking to a domain capstone.
Portfolio projects that Indian recruiters can open
A minimum of five projects, including an Excel dashboard, a BI dashboard and an end to end capstone in a domain such as retail, finance, healthcare or marketing.
Two months of internship exposure in reporting work
After about three months of structured learning, a real-time internship gives exposure across reporting, dashboarding and business analytics.
Profile work written for analyst recruiters
Help with your resume, GitHub and LinkedIn, plus mock interviews to rehearse the technical and case rounds described above.
Placement assistance through hiring partners
Support runs through our hiring-partner network. We assist with your search and preparation, and every hiring decision remains the employer's.
Quick answers about starting as a data analyst in India
Short answers to questions Indian learners search most often.
Do I need certifications to become a data analyst in India?
Not strictly. Employers mostly want proof that you can use Excel, SQL and a dashboard tool, which projects and interviews show. Certifications such as the Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate can add weight, but they support your portfolio rather than replace it.
Do I need Python to get a data analyst job in India?
Many entry roles are screened first on Excel, SQL and a BI tool. Python with Pandas is a useful addition and some roles ask for it, so read the job description. Learn it after your core three, not before them.
Is an MBA or postgraduate degree needed to work as a data analyst in India?
No. Plenty of analysts join with a bachelor's degree. Some employers prefer a postgraduate degree for certain roles, but for most entry positions a working skill set, finished projects and clear interview answers carry the weight.
What should a fresher put on a data analyst resume in India?
Lead with a short skills line naming Excel, SQL, Power BI or Tableau and Python. Then list two or three projects, each with the question, tools and result in one line, followed by education and your GitHub or LinkedIn link.
Are MIS executive jobs a good way to start as a data analyst?
They can be, if the role involves real reporting work in Excel or SQL and room to build dashboards. Ask which tools you would use and who reads your reports. A reporting role with growing scope can lead toward analyst positions.
