What is the salary of a Cyber Security Engineer in India?

Skill IT publishes only an indicative entry-to-mid range for the Cyber Security programme: roughly ₹3.5L to ₹9L a year in India (about $55K to $95K globally) for SOC Analyst, Security Analyst and Junior Penetration Tester roles. It does not publish an engineer-specific figure. Engineer pay depends heavily on what you build and run, so this article shows how to read that and what to develop.

Why the word engineer means many jobs on a security job board

Search a job site for security engineer and you will see roles that have little in common. One is a Network Security Engineer looking after firewalls and segmentation. Another is a Cloud Security Engineer reviewing configurations in a cloud account. A third is a VAPT Engineer running assessments against applications, and a fourth is a SIEM Engineer building the detection rules that a SOC depends on. Each is called an engineer, and each pays according to a different market.

The general idea is that analysts mostly watch, assess and report, while engineers mostly build, configure and run the controls. The line is not clean, and plenty of analysts do engineering work and the reverse. What it means for pay is that no single number can be honest. Skill IT publishes one indicative entry-to-mid range for the Cyber Security programme, roughly ₹3.5L to ₹9L a year in India, and it does not break that range out for engineer titles. Like every range on this site it is broad, varies by company, city, specialisation and experience, and is not a guarantee.

What is known is the direction of travel. Engineering roles tend to sit on top of solid fundamentals, hands-on tool experience and some ownership of a system. What is not known, from this data, is a fair average for any one engineer title, and we would rather say that than dress up a guess as a fact.

Six steps toward an entry level security engineer role

Engineering hiring managers want proof that you have built and fixed things. Work through these steps in order and keep a record of each one.

  1. Pick one engineering lane to aim at

Choose between network security, cloud security, VAPT, or SIEM and detection engineering. A focused candidate with one lane reads more clearly than someone who lists every tool.

  2. Build the base in networks and both operating systems

Engineers configure things, so you need to understand the OSI and TCP/IP models, ports, firewall rules and Windows and Linux administration well enough to explain your choices.

  3. Stand up a lab that mimics a small company

Use VirtualBox to build a segmented network with a firewall, a few servers and a vulnerable target. Something that you built and can defend in an interview is worth more than a screenshot of a course.

  4. Harden something and write down what changed

Take a deliberately weak setup, fix it, and document the before, the after and the reason for each change. This is the engineer's version of a project report.

  5. Work with detection and automation

Tune correlation rules in a SIEM, and look at how alerts can be enriched or routed automatically. Even small experiments show that you think about repeatable systems, not one-off fixes.

  6. Add one certification that matches your lane

CompTIA Security+ is a broad first step. CEH, OSCP, and cloud or Microsoft security credentials suit particular lanes. Read your target listings to see which one they mention.

Who asks about the engineer salary and what they need first

Because engineer titles vary, your starting point should decide which lane and which first project you choose.

Network engineer moving toward security

You are closest to a Network Security Engineer path. Firewalls, segmentation and traffic analysis are already familiar, so add attack knowledge and monitoring.

Software or cloud developer curious about security

Cloud and application security lanes fit you. You understand how systems are built, which helps when you review how they can be misused.

Fresher who saw a big engineer figure online

Be careful with screenshots of numbers. Treat any figure without a role, city and experience level as unreliable, and start by collecting listings yourself.

SOC analyst wanting to build instead of watch

SIEM and detection engineering is a natural step. Your knowledge of what alerts look like in practice is exactly what good detection rules are built from.

What engineering hiring managers want to see you have built

These are the skills and proofs that make an engineer application feel credible at entry level.

  • Networking depth: the OSI and TCP/IP models, ports and protocols, and firewall and wireless encryption basics
  • Administration fluency on Linux and Windows, including the command line on both
  • A working lab in VirtualBox with Kali Linux, Parrot Security or a vulnerable target
  • Vulnerability scanning and scoring with tools such as Nmap, OpenVAS or Nessus, using CVE and CVSS properly
  • Web and network testing basics with Burp Suite, OWASP ZAP and the OWASP Top 10
  • Cloud security concepts, including the IaaS, PaaS and SaaS service models
  • SIEM and detection basics: log sources, correlation rules and reducing false positives
  • Written reports that explain a finding, a fix and the reason for it in plain language

Engineer titles that appear in the Skill IT career paths

The Cyber Security programme lists several engineer roles across its career tracks. Skill IT does not publish a separate figure for any of them, but they show how wide the word is.

Network Security Engineer

Sits in the Network and Cloud Security track. The programme's firewall, wireless, IDS and IPS topics feed this role.

Cloud Security Engineer

Also in the Network and Cloud Security track. The curriculum introduces cloud service models and common cloud attack vectors as a starting point.

VAPT Engineer

Found in the VAPT and Application Security track. It draws on reconnaissance, web exploitation, wireless, mobile and IoT assessment work.

Security Automation Engineer

Listed in the AI-Driven Security track alongside Threat Detection Engineer. The last module touches automated incident response and SOC workflow orchestration.

How the Cyber Security programme in Madhapur supports an engineer route

Skill IT Education teaches the Advanced Cyber Security Certification Program at its Madhapur centre in Hyderabad. This is what stands behind the learning.

Six modules, 180 hours, labs throughout

The curriculum runs from networking and ethical hacking foundations to penetration testing, cryptography and security operations, with lab exercises in every module.

A lab you build in Module 1 and keep using

You build an isolated penetration-testing lab with VirtualBox, Kali Linux and Parrot Security at the start, and continue to use it for the rest of the programme.

At least five portfolio projects and a project phase of three months

Projects include a network penetration test report, a web application audit and a vulnerability prioritisation dashboard, so your portfolio shows building and fixing, not only reading.

Two months of internship across security work

Internship exposure spans penetration testing, SOC operations and cloud security, which helps you see which lane suits you before you commit.

Resume, GitHub and LinkedIn help with mock interviews

How to check an engineer salary figure without trusting a website

Start with recent job listings for the exact title and city you care about, and note what each one asks you to have built or run. Two listings with the same title can sit far apart in scope, seniority, employer type and pay, and only the listing tells you which one you are looking at.

Next, have an honest conversation with someone who does the job now. Ask what they were doing in their first months, which skills they were assessed on and how their responsibilities changed as they gained certifications and hands-on experience. People are often more open than students expect.

Finally, when an offer arrives, ask for the full cost-to-company. Look at fixed and variable pay, allowances, on-call terms and notice period together. That number belongs to a real job, and it will tell you more than any published average for a role as broad as engineer.
